Improving Healthcare Access and Outcomes in Underserved Communities

Diabetes mellitus has emerged as a major health care problem worldwide. Low and middle income countries face the greatest burden of diabetes. India is currently experiencing an epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus and has the largest number of diabetic patients. It is often referred to as the diabetes capital of the world. The rural Indian population is undergoing lifestyle transition due to socio-economic growth. Many villages in India have undergone a drastic change in living standards and lifestyles. These lifestyle changes have led to rise in the lifestyle related diseases in rural areas.

To ensure the screening facility of diabetes along with the other NCDs in the rural and hard-to-reach areas Jivika has partnered with the Government of Assam and Siemens Healthineers. The mobile medical units (Healthcare on Wheels) reach the hard-to-reach areas of Assam to cater the healthcare needs of the community. During one of the medical camp organized in Chaikata village of Boko block in Assam, a 37 years old lady named Nandita Rabha came for regular check-up. She was diagnosed with diabetes. She was counselled on diet and lifestyle modification to control diabetes. She was then referred to the Govt. health facility by the Medical Officer for treatment. After multiple follow-ups Nandita is currently taking treatment from a private hospital. To reduce the burden of diabetes, screening is important as many cases of diabetes remain undetected. Through the healthcare on wheels initiative, we are ensuring that the cases of diabetes in rural areas are detected at the earliest so that measures can be taken to control and treat them.
