Measles is a highly infectious acute viral disease for which has no specific treatment is available. It is a leading cause of childhood mortality among the vaccine preventable diseases in India.Measles can be prevented by vaccination with a safe and effective vaccine provided free of cost to each child under the universal immunization program (UIP) across the country.

In India, the first dose coverage of the measles vaccine dropped to 88% in 2020 from 100% in 2018.

The major cause of these larger outbreaks is due to the COVID-19 pandemic and movement restrictions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has come in full swing and started with the MR vaccination drive to create immunity against the disease.

The outbreak can be attributed to multiple reasons:

Ensure availability of trained medical staff to immunize under MR vaccine, through which we are reducing out-of-pocket expenditure and mortality rates

Ensure availability of trained medical staff to immunize under MR vaccine, through which we are reducing out-of-pocket expenditure and mortality rates centers are far from the villages and are at high risk pregnancy.

Lack of awareness of health & financial repercussions of delayed medical attention
Fundamental access challenge for population segments living in urban slums and catchment areas
Lack of manpower to vaccinate under the UIP
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the limitations of resources at the immunization drive, thereby putting a higher emphasis on the need for the same to reach closer to the doorstep of the underserved.
With the current outset of the measles outbreak, the Mumbai Metropolitan area has confirmed 303 active cases and reported 8 deaths and 3 suspected fatalities
To expedite and augment the govts. efforts toward the achievement of its Universal immunization program goals, we started a specialized van-based model unit.

Each specialized mobile van consist of trained medical staff, AEFI kit and vaccines.  Each population catchment is visited at a fixed cadence basis population size and conditions covered through a route map which shall be charted out with the help of the district and state health officials.  The patients will be vaccinated and kept under observation. like Gomati to undergo ANC checkup within their village without travelling to distantly located healthcare centers.
